The classes listed below are just a part of the many B.D.U.C Universal Education Experiences. Our commitment is to provide the highest degree of knowledge and practical application in the field of dance. BDUC, Celebrating 22 years of sharing Dance expertise and diversity with the Universe, right here in beautiful Long Beach, California USA!

Workshop registration includes admission for day or eve session in the price,
depending on the time of your workshop.
Prices will not go up at the door.
NOTE: In order to certify, you MUST be signed up to compete in at least 1 category.
ATTENTION: You are welcome to register for any class BUT, to be eligible for the performance opportunity in the Sat or Sun evening show with Helena and/or Sadie,
you must be registered in BOTH their workshops Sat and/or Sunday. Thank you!
SATURDAY, FEB 18, 2012
SATURDAY, ROOM 101A
10:30AM - 12:30 PM – SAHRA SAEEDA - Saidi Folkloric Dance for Orientale Dancers - including a Saidi tableau is very popular in Cairo's Orientale Dance Shows. It is the most used folkloric style within the Orientale performance. We will learn some basic Saidi steps and how to transition in and out of Saidi and Orientale. Included are several examples of Orientale Dance music that have Saidi sections in them with suggested combinations and transitions.
4:15PM – 5:15PM - ANISA - "Entrances! Exciting, enthusiastic, enchanting!" Your entrance is one of the most important parts of the dance - you have to connect with your audience from the start! Learn exciting entrance combinations focusing on timing and tempos (fast, slow, medium) - phrasing - isolation - posture - and maybe we'll add some finger cymbals - so bring them with you!
6:00PM – 8:00PM – LEILA FARID - "Contemporary Cairo" - Today's Egyptian Style..what that really means to dancers and Egyptians. Choreography with contemporary moves and explanation of approach to music. Includes evening admission.
SATURDAY, 101B
9:00AM - 12:00 NOON – SADIE - Day 1 BDUC Certification Class #1- Learn to Identify and Define. Then lose yourself in the many
different rhythms incorporated in a HOT drum solo!.
Count and Accent these rhythms though Sadie's pops,locks and drops
that TOTALLY emphasize the drummer's rhythmical message to YOU thus allowing YOU to show off YOUR own personal PIZAZZ!
Embrace the rhythmical flow by incorporating smooth body work and
isolations, accentuated by soulful hand and arm gestures to create
your own personal signature on stage! If you have enrolled with Sadie for both days of the
" Drum Solo Experience," this class will prepare you to take your drum solo to
the professional LIVE concert level on Sunday! Day admission included.
1:30PM – 2:30PM –
JAYNA KOUZOUYAN and MARTA SCHILL, "ExZILLerating" - 1 hour: Dance combos and cymbal patterns -- at the same time!!! "Ex-ZILL-erating combos with Marta and Jayna." Can you dance, but not with cymbals? Can you play cymbals, but not with dance? Let the two come together, like family! And who better to help you along the way than mother/daughter duo Marta Schill and Jayna Kouzouyan! Take their workshop at BDUC in Long Beach 2012 and you'll never want to have one without the other again... dancing and zill playing, I mean - but that goes for Marta and Jayna as well!
3:30PM - 6:30PM – HELENA VLAHOS - Day 1 BDUC Certification Class #2: "Vintage Cabaret for the Modern Belly Dancer: Bringing Back the 1960's & 1970's Belly Dance" in a 3 Part Routine: Fast, Slow, Fast -- and the whole class will be Performing LIVE Saturday Evening after the Specialty Category.
1) Fast: Veil Entrance with Traveling Steps, such as Walks, Basic Egyptian; Advanced Basic; Hip Bumps; 3-Step and Turns.
2) Chiftetelli Combos using Hip Circles, Figure Eights, Mayas, Sways, Camels and their variations where each move melts into the next with graceful arms to compliment your every move with Helena’s classic stylization.
3) Maqsum with Sassy Combinations to spice up your dance with this popular rhythm. A Short Finale will follow using some moves used in the Entrance.

SUNDAY, ROOM 101A
9:30AM - 11:30AM - LEILA FARID - "Songs of Adaweya" - Understand dancing to the songs of the father of Shabbi. Cultural context and great Shabbi moves. Short Choreography and Improvisation. Includes Day Admission.
11:45AM - 12:45PM - MESMERA - SWEET 16 Count Cabaret Combos with Veil. Bring a veil or borrow one of my feather-light silk veils to make flying even more fun!
3:00PM – 5:00PM - SAHRA SAEEDA - Egyptian Transitional Dance of the 1960's - after the Hollywood/Cairo fusion of the Golden Cinema Era, Egypt owned their own Cinema & entertainment industry. Dancers flourishing at this time of rediscovering an Egyptian identity were Fifi Abdo and Soheir Zaki. We will be teaching their STYLE and TECHNIQUE. We include History, a DETAILED breakdown teaching technique, execution and stage presentation. Includes Day Admission.
SUNDAY, 101B
9:00AM - 12:00 NOON – HELENA VLAHOS - Day 2, BDUC Certification Class #3 - Taxim (TAKASIM, TAQSIM, TAKSEEM or any other spelling). Taxim is a beautiful instrumental improvisation. It is played by a solo instrument such as the violin, oud, flute, qanoun or any other instrument. This does not include percussion.
We will focus on improvisation & creativity.
Taxim can be slow, medium or fast. We will focus on all 3 of these styles of taxsim so you can make your dance memorable!
Abdominal embellishements add to Taxim as does Floorwork, Arm, Body and Head Work, especially when done simultaneously.
Greek music also has the nice fast Chiftetelli Taxim which we dance with lively shimmying movements.
Bring knee pads if you need them for floorwork. Floorwork will be minimal!
12:15PM - 1:15PM - MA*SHUQA MIRA MURJAN - "Ma*Shuqa's Turkish Style Improvisational Dance Choreography Workshop "CD Fire Dance by Faruk Tekbilek"
- Ma*Shuqa's Improvisational Dance Workshop is a structured guide for performance to the music of "Fire Dance." This unique recording embraces many moods, at once energetic and meditative, mystical and joyous. This music transports the dancer to a magical land where patterns of rich Middle Eastern traditions are joined in music. Fire Dance workshop will be an adventure in transformation from which there is no turning back. The workshop includes an explanation of this unique music, along with dance styling that includes how to dance to oud and nai, dramatic step styles, quick dance footwork and Turkish style dance steps.
1:30PM – 2:30PM - AMINA GOODYEAR - How to dance to Om Kalthoum -
Included in the workshop will be a short history on Om plus an analysis on the musical, rhythmic and lyrical structure of the songs. Amina will use one song as an example and will teach a choreography that will lend itself to improvisation if desired. There is no word in the English language that accurately defines the word "Tarab". In Arabic culture "Tarab" is used to describe the emotional effect of the music on the listener. These emotions evoke ecstasy and trance. Amina hopes to show how you can bridge these emotions to the audience through the music and song of Om Kalthoum. http://www.aswandancers.org/Tarabiya.htm
3:30PM - 6:30PM - SADIE, Day 2, BDUC Certification Class #4: You will be the 1st in the Universe to learn Amir Sofi's NEW Drum solo and perform LIVE on stage with SADIE & AMIR! (bring your favorite costume, or competitive attire). Special choreography by Sadie to Amir Sofi's Latest release will debut at BDUC 22 Sunday Evening! Apply all you learned in SATURDAY'S class to enhance your concert performance with these 2 stellar performers ... Sadie will teach her original choreography just for BDUC22!!! You will learn, drill, and then rehearse Live with Amir. You will go though a complete breakdown and rehearsal with "Amir Sofi & the Drummers of the Universe."
You will then have time to relax and dress or compete. You will then perform LIVE on stage
at the closing ceremonies of BDUC 22 Belly Dancer of the Universe Competition, Truly An Event of Olympic Calibur. Evening admission included. |
